“God’s work. Our hands.” Sunday is September 8, 2019. This day is an opportunity to celebrate who we are as the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America – one church, freed in Christ to serve and love our neighbor.
Service activities offer an opportunity for us to explore one of our most basic convictions as Lutherans: that all of life in Jesus Christ – every act of service, in every daily calling, in every corner of life – flows freely from a living, daring confidence in God’s grace.
This year we will be joining with our Evangelical Lutheran Church in America congregation, ministry partners, and organization in “God’s Work. Our hands” with a week of service by partnering with The Homeless Children’s Education Fund.
There are more than 4,000 students in Allegheny County who lack a fixed, regular nighttime address. The Homeless Children’s Education Fund (HCEF) is working with approximately 300 high school students in Pittsburgh who fit this description. Students often present at school in need of very basic items. We will put together bags of toiletry items for these students at Pittsburgh Public High Schools. This is a project in conjunction with HCEF. Visit their site at Homelessfund.org
We are requesting donations of:
- Toothpaste and toothbrush
- Deodorant
- Mouthwash
- Liquid body soap
- Comb or brush
- For girls’ packs: feminine hygiene needs (pads or tampons)
Regular size (not travel size) items are preferred, so that students have a longer supply
